This morning a guy at work caught me as I passed, pointed to another coworker and said with incredulousness "Can you believe she's never seen Forrest Gump?!"

"Wow. Lucky you." I said.

It's rare to get such an opening, but it was delicious! in the words of Heidi Klum "haHA!"

Last night I watched the British National film of "Gaslight", which was done in 1940, 4 years before the Charles Boyer/Ingrid Bergman/Angela Lansbury one. I guess MGM tried to have all prints of it destroyed, but it was released under another title, and again finally in 1952. It's actually really great in its way, mostly because of Anton Walbrook, who is riveting. I miss Angela Lansbury, but other than that this is concentrated psychodrama. As in the Red Shoes, Anton's tortured and concentrated. He's a fascinating villian, much more interesting for me than Boyer, because he always seems like he has something to hide. When he is confronted near the end of the film, he does one of the best, if not the best, fake "I'm not guilty" laughs I have heard. You can watch it here, starting at about 6:00 to get the effect. He gets really raw and kind of off his hinges.

Brilliance. He's scary. In fact, his torture of her is so painful from the beginning that it's almost too much to watch. Geeereat melodrama.
