11:28 am - Patti Smith

Wow. [info]guysterrules couldn't use his ticket to Patti Smith on Saturday, so he gave it to me. I'm so glad. Amazing show.

She's amazing. She reminds me of Karen Finley.

You really get rock n'roll. Not the idea, but the reality.

This makes me smile. Usually I hate "essentialist" gay stuff, but this tickles me. So there.

So, I can't afford to go to see this in Malibu, but she's so astounding in concert I wish I could. Click on the link to see her live in the KCRW studio singing Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah". Wow.

05:04 pm - I am

.......this........gay.......

I have been listening to this over and over in my car. Wierdly, mostly for "Give a Little, Get a Little" and "The World is Beautiful Today" from Hazel Flagg, a musical about a girl who gets picked up by the press for having radium poisoning, then finds out she doesn't have it, but doesn't know how to tell anyone since she's enjoying the attention. Topical.

05:45 pm - Rufus

You should all read [info]e_ticket's review of Rufus, since I think he hit it on the head--but I just was thinking of a couple more things:

In the end, his performance was healing and fabulous just in that he was doing it. I spoke with a man this morning who HATED it, and mostly because Rufus couldn't really sing most of the songs, and he didn't like his voice. And he said something like "if that's the best we can offer as gay men, then..." The point wasn't to sing like she did, and it also pointed to how challenging what she did was.

Wierdly, for me, on some songs his weakness added to the vulnerability. For instance, the dirge-like version of Do It Again sung in her own key became oddly naked. And instead of naughty it became revealing. Either way, I thought it was really more about the tribute--when he came out in the stockings, tuxedo jacket and hat for Get Happy--amazing. The man who hated it said "I don't need anyone to remind me how fabulous Judy is". And perhaps he doesn't. But the concert wasn't about that--it was about reminding us all how fabulous we are for loving her or people like her--and how many of us had someone like her who we listened to over and over and dreamed about. Having a whole crowd of gay men cheer over that was the best pride event I've ever attended.

10:24 am - Lucinda Part 2

So I went to the El Rey again to see Lucinda again and she was amazing again. She did the album "Sweet Old World", which is a fave of mine. Aside from the really obnoxious drunk next to us who was yelling like he knew her and was "in" on everything (that's fun), the show was great and the crowd was, too. She had to start "Which Will" over three times, and got a little upset, but came back and just plowed out an amazing second set. She just talks and tells stories, and you really feel out of time. Her special guests were E from the Eels, and Robby Krieger from the Doors. Yes, she did "Riders on the Storm" for an encore. That was pretty awesome. She played from about 9:00 to 12:20. Yeesh, I'm tired. Still incredible, and wish I was going tonight, since Emmylou is guesting and it's her first album "Lucinda Williams", which includes "Passionate Kisses", her most well-known song. At least it's all being recorded. Glad I went, but t-i-u-d.

11:07 am - Lucinda

So I saw Lucinda Williams perform the entire album "World Without Tears" on Wedensday at the El Rey. She's fantastic. I'd seen her once, but in a giant venue. The El Rey was great. She played the entire album, then took a break and then came back to play another entire set and two encores. Meanwhile, the live set of the album was being duped to CD so you could buy it that night. (!) She took the stage at 9:10, and the concert ended at 12:20.

Even more amazingly, she was joined on stage by Shelby Lynne (who is a riveting loose cannon if there ever was one--I was kind of afraid she'd jump Lucinda right on stage--she said what a great ass she had and kept circling her--it was wild--and what a voice--I'd see her live in a minute). THEN, ANN WILSON OF HEART came out and sang "get it right with god" with her. It took a bit to hit it's stride, as it seemed unrehearsed, but they did and it was amazing. Ann Wilson! Still sounds great. Did you know she's 57? Crazy.

And cooler still-I get to see her again on Sunday, doing my favorite album "Sweet Old World". I'm telling you--if you can, get tickets. The poetry of her music is kind of stunning. Here's an example:

If we lived in a world without tears
How would bruises find
The face to lie upon
How would scars find skin
To etch themselves into
How would broken find the bones

--

You wait in the car on the side of the road
Lemme go and stand awhile, I wanna know you're there but I wanna be alone
If only for a minute or two
I wanna see what it feels like to be without you
I wanna know the touch of my own skin
Against the sun, against the wind

--

See what you lost when you left this world, this sweet old world
The breath from your own lips, the touch of fingertips
A sweet and tender kiss
The sound of a midnight train, wearing someone's ring
Someone calling your name
Somebody so warm cradled in your arm
Didn't you think you were worth anything
See what you lost when you left this world, this sweet old world

--

Words Fell
Like roses at our feet
When you let me see you cry
Your silent lips against my cheek
Words Fell
On a night as black as coal
Your kisses traveled deep
Your eyes pierced my soul
Words Fell

--

And this one, that makes me laugh:

Just a shakin' in my knees, just a cold chill
Don't know what it is, just call it a thrill
Just a lump in my throat, just hot blood
Don't know what it is, some call it love
Well I saw you out in your car
You had the top down, you were drivin' real slow

Well I saw you in the grocery store
Buyin' tomatoes for a casserole

Well I saw you in the laundrymat
Washin' your clothes, gettin' all the dirt out

Well I saw you with your car broke down
Fixin' your flat with a tire iron

You'd have to hear how she says "casserole"...

It's hard to describe--her music is incantatory. I love it.

I hear in New York she's having Sonic Youth for one night, and possibly Springsteen (!)

She's on KCRW right now. You can listen on line.

11:28 am - Better get to livin'

So Dolly has a new single, and it's a tough love advice single. Here are some of the lyrics:

"People always comin’ up to me and asking Dolly what’s your secret?
With all you do your attitude just seems to be so good how do you keep it?

Well, I’m not the Dalai Lama, but I’ll try to offer up a few words of advice

You better get to livin, givin’, don’t forget to thow in a little forgivin’, and love along the way
You better get to knowin’, showin’ a little bit more concern about where you’re goin’

You better stop whinin', pinin', get your dreams in line and then just shine, refine, design until they do...."

Including a verse about a friend complaining about her life, to which she responds "so negative the words she had to say, I said 'if I had a violin, I'd play'..."

You can download it on iTunes. She's like the tough love grandma--maybe that's why I like her a lot.

Here are some quotes from my actual (89 this year) Granmda Esther:

"Dont try. Do."
"You can tell your story twice. After that you're wallowing in it"
"I'm glad you're being you in my universe"
"Don't worry about it--I don't even remember 85"

So you can see why I love Dolly.

In other country news--have you heard the Reba/ Kelly Clarkson duet of "Because of you?" I love how Reba vowel modifies--"and now I cry in the middle of the night from the same damn theeeaaaauuuooooowwwwuuueeeeeng." She's queen of that. And she may be a Republican (as has been pointed out), but she's who she is. Can't fault her for that. Love it, in fact. Glad she's being her in my universe. I still prefer Kelly's solo version, but I do like this one. You can check out the video here:

Current movie lines I really, really can't get out of my head:

Judy Davis in Celebrity: "I'm becoming one of those women I always hated and I love it!"

And from a short film called "The Village Idiot"--"You can't be Marilyn McCoo, but you can be an awful lot like Marilyn McCoo...."

And those are my country fried thoughts for the day....

Someone just mentioned this song, and it occured to me it's one of the wierdest songs ever to be a big hit. But that was the 70's for you--wicker, quianna, and Mrs. Roper.

This version is done with the Star Wars characters:

I don't know if this is truly him or not, but I just got this comment to my post about Ashley MacIsaac:

hi THIS IS ASHLEY WRITING YOU- I DID GET MARRIED AFTERALL
IN HALIFAX AT THE LORD NELSON- AND MYPARTENR IS JUST WONDERFUL.
KEEPLISTENING
ASHLEY

How awesome is that? And even after I kind of intimated that he's a little wacky in my post. I like him even more now. And excellent--big gay weddings! Yeeha!

I just heard Amy Winehouse's Rehab this weekend for the first time.

And this one with a great 60s hook, too:

And she can sing live, too:

What's with all this 60's redux big hair bad girl stuff from England? I'm loving it. I hear the album is great. Really surprising voice and sound. And quite an earworm.

01:31 pm - Uggams!

If you haven't seen this brilliant, and the subtitles are hysterical, although I think she sings "honkin' the bejesus" instead of what they have, but it's a whole nother level of hystericality if you haven't seen it. And she's so good, the first time you hear it, you think it's your hearing and not her complete loss of words.

Basically, she rocks. And she has quite a lot of self-confidence when she's performing. She doesn't really need this, but wow. She's got a little Stephanie Mills quality in her voice, but broader.

10:52 am - Lucky

So on my really short drive this morning, STAR 98.7 was having a contest. I wasn't sure what the prize was, but I just picked up my phone and called. It rang once, and I was caller 20. And I won two tickets to see Christina Aguilera at the Pond (Honda center?) in Anaheim on Monday night. How crazy is that? So I guess I'm seeing Xtina live if I can get my ass to the OC on a Monday.

10:07 am - Never Been to Me?

I just was forwarded this email from Dolores Petersen (who actually has a lovely voice, and is a good jazz singer). Guess who her special guest is?

From the email:

SATURDAY, FEB 3, 2007 8PM

DOLORES PETERSEN (vocals)
JANE GETZ (keyboard)
EDWIN LIVINGSTON (bass)

WITH SPECIAL GUEST CHARLENE

Hollywood Studio Bar & Grill

http://www.myspace.com/dolorespetersen
This is especially happy time for me... to introduce you to a dear friend that I have been reunited with... I had the privilege of working with her some years ago at Motown Records. Charlene, who has been known for the Pop hit "I've Never Been To Me" will be joining us. She is just returning from helping to promote one of the most successful Australian movies of all times which is now a dazzling musical spectacular. Priscilla Queen of the Desert, the musical is based on the Oscar winning film that blitzed the box office and caused a sensation around the world. It's fun, daring, over the top and unforgettable. Charlene will be starting a new project and we will be witness to the very beginnings of this talented artist and fun venture.

01:22 pm - Is it Just Me?

I heard "On the Radio" the other day, and it reminded me that at the Golden Globes, somehow she:

Reminded me of her:

I don't know what it is, but does anyone else see it? I have a memory of buying "Donna Summer's Greatest Hits" On the Radio Volume 1 & 2" double album with money I had saved up. My Dad wouldn't help me with it, but drove me to buy it, so I actually counted pennies from baby sitting, etc., to make up the 12.99 it cost. And then I brought it home and hung the poster included

over my stereo. Raquel Welch on foil in a bathing suit was over my bed.

And Jaclyn Smith in a peasnt blouse near the closet.

Kind of ridiculous, since I spent all my time listening to Barbra Streisand. I think I did have a poster of Classical Barbra up though

And the continuous beat under all the tracks on "On the Radio" just amazed me back in 1979. I was eleven. Oh, wow, I just gayed out there for a minute--how gay was my bedroom? This is the gayest post ever--do I get a tiara or something? Anyhow, I am the only one feeling the resemblance? Maybe it was the dress....

02:08 pm - Helsinki Complaints Choir

This is great. It's a choir from Helsinki with a 6 minute song that is just random complaints. Excellent. Among them:

The employment agency only needs Java programmers
Our ancestors could have picked a sunnier place to be
We always lose to Sweden in Hockey and Eurovision
